What leading a Cavalry Scout platoon taught me about standard operating procedures in civilian business. In the military, SOPs aren't suggestions; they are the baseline for survival and mission success. When I transitioned to the civilian business world, I was shocked by the lack of structured processes.
Business operators often rely on 'tribal knowledge', information stored in the heads of key employees. When those employees leave, the knowledge leaves with them. This is a massive operational vulnerability. In a platoon, if a leader goes down, the next person steps up and executes the exact same playbook.
To achieve military precision in your business, you must document everything. Every process, from onboarding a new client to handling a customer complaint, needs a written SOP. These documents should be clear, concise, and easily accessible to the entire team.
But documentation isn't enough. You must train to the standard. An SOP is useless if your team doesn't know how to execute it. Regular training and scenario-based drills ensure that the procedures become muscle memory.
Finally, you must enforce the standard. If you allow deviations without consequence, the SOP loses its value. Hold your team accountable to the established processes, and continuously refine those processes based on real-world feedback.
